Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to provide an in-depth study of the interlocking connection between liberties and a democratic government. Also, included will be an analysis of the role of the citizenry in the overall ability for a democracy to function and what effects inaction by the citizenry has on a democratic government. The thesis will provide an argument that American society is becoming less active socially and politically, resulting in a weakening of American Democracy. To support this theory an examination of the effects the liberal tradition, specifically with regards to the focus on individualism, has had on American society and its politics. The paper also includes a discussion of what exactly defines a democracy and perspectives from theorists on what makes a democracy weak.
