Abstract
Problem Significance: The southern United States is the hub of HIV infection, and San Antonio, TX is one of the most affected cities. HIV stigma contributes to an increase in HIV incidence among Texas' most vulnerable communities. AIDS-related illnesses are the ninth leading cause of mortality among Bexar County residents aged 25 to 44. Because AIDS and AIDS-related illnesses take ten-years or more to develop, it is critical to implement interventions focused on the adolescent population.
Analysis and Objectives: The main drivers of HIV stigma include the fear of illness, contagion, or death; however, HIV stigma also manifests into various stigma mechanisms. HIV stigma and discriminatory practices influence different health behaviors, including willingness to seek out treatment, disclosure of HIV status, and maintaining antiretroviral adherence. To reduce HIV stigma, objectives of this program seek to improve adolescents’ attitude toward PLHIV, improve knowledge about HIV transmissibility, and increase engagement in the HIV care continuum.
Intervention Proposal: The Let’s Talk programming aims to reduce HIV stigma among adolescents by using theory-informed intergroup contact and educational information-based methods.
Recommendations and Conclusions: Recommendations include develop an effective communication plan, utilize principles of persuasion, and prepare for unanticipated challenges as a public health practitioner.
