Abstract
Research has found that classrooms have centered on White stories and authors. Even with the rising Latinx community, there have been few Latinx stories and authors being accurately told from the Latinx viewpoint. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the perceptions of Latinx mothers' views of Latinx portrayals in children's literature and the criteria these Latinx mothers used to select their children’s literature. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis. Five themes emerged that helped us understand Latinx mothers' perceptions of portrayals of Latinx culture in children’s literature. Nine themes emerged as criteria that Latinx mothers used to select their children's literature. Findings focused on how previous harmful or exclusions of Latinx depictions influenced what these Latinx mothers would like to see in future children’s literature.
