Abstract
This exploratory study examines the knowledge of eating disorder patterns and body dissatisfaction among Filipino Americans. The 84 participants were over the age of 18 and of Filipino American descents. Subjects completed a self-administered structured questionnaire. Quantitative data were analyzed using the computer software SPSS program. Of the 84, the overwhelming majority, 7 4 of the respondents were familiar with eating disorders. Fifty-six knew at least one to three Filipina American females with an eating disorder. More than half "agreed" or "strongly agreed" eating disorders are a prevalent issue among Filipino American females. The majority of participants also agreed poor body image is an issue among Filipina American females. Almost all (79 out of 84) believe that increasing the number of Filipino therapist and culturally sensitive service providers would be helpful in supporting Filipina American females with eating disorders.
