Abstract
This paper attempts to discover which instructional strategies and aids help increase the passage rate of students on the FITNESSGRAM. Recent research demonstrates within FITNESSGRAM testing that teachers who implement a variety of teaching strategies improve their students’ health related fitness (Silverman, Keating, & Phillips, 2008). Sources of Data This researcher collected the data by using a 20 question survey. Questions were answered using a Likert-type rating scale, with options ranging from strongly agree, agree, undecided, disagree, and strongly disagree as well as a few questions needing to be ranked. Data obtained from the survey as well as from the California Department of Education (CDE) website was sufficient to analysis correlations between the use of a variety of instructional strategies and improved FITNESSGRAM test scores. Conclusions Reached The conclusions reached from this study were inconclusive due to the small sample of data received from the survey. The survey showed that teachers who used lectures as an instructional strategies had a higher student passage rate in all areas of the FITNESSGRAM, with an overall passage rate in all four areas of 98.7%. This however, is not necessarily a representation of what teachers should solely use to help students pass the FITNESSGRAM, due to the small sample size. The research study indicated that video was the instructional aide that most teachers used as their primary choice to help increase their student’s passage rate on the FITNESSGRAM, with an overall passage rate in all four areas of 77.5%.
