Abstract
The main focus of this project was to provide instruction to augmentative alternative communication (AAC) users and their family members during time outside of the classroom in the home and community environments. Instruction occurred in the form of eight educational training sessions that were provided to AAC users and their family members. AAC devices used by the participants of this project included iPads with the AAC applications Sono Flex and Go Talk Now. Instructional content of the eight educational training sessions included three main teaching strategies. The first teaching strategy instructed to AAC users and their family members was paired association and memory of picture icons used in AAC iPad applications. The second teaching strategy used during the educational training sessions was the System for Augmenting Language; one of the specific aided augmented input strategies for teaching AAC users. The third teaching strategy used during educational training sessions was storybook reading of symbol-based literature. Five participants, and their various family members, participated in this project. Instruction was provided in their home environments to address the need for ongoing language support to AAC users after instructional time that occurs in the classroom.
