Abstract
This study explored the mental health needs within an academic setting, with particular attention to the mental health needs of at risk youth within Hiram Johnson High School in Sacramento, California. Participants consisted of Hiram Johnson students ranging from 9th through 12th grades, a total of 698 students participated in the questionnaire survey administered by the school social worker. In addition to the survey, 50 selected student representatives were asked to take part in a verbal interview survey, otherwise known as the Student Voice Group. The findings revealed that participants report significant issues surrounding mental health needs within an academic setting. Future research will be needed on what the risk factors are for students having mental health related issues and how to best provide support for these risks.
