Abstract
This research project examined the various barriers that formerly incarcerated individuals encountered while they were on parole in the state of California. A sample of ten individuals who had been off parole for two or more years were interviewed about the barriers they experienced while trying to complete their parole. Themes that emerged included recovery, the importance of support, redefining themselves, and reconstructing their lives. In summary, this project reflected the need for social worker involvement as it relates to the areas of case management and procurement of resources for individuals serving time on parole. Additionally it illustrates the need for inclusion of the perspectives of those who have completed the process in their own words.
