Abstract
The purpose of this article is to evaluate the methods used to simulate modern excitation control systems in salient-pole hydropower generator applications. This paper will primarily focus on the behavior of automatic voltage regulator (AVR) limiters and how they respond to disturbances. The modeling will be done by implementing IEEE 421.5 standard dynamic models, based on a modern regulator application of an ASEA Brown Boveri (ABB) UNITROL 6080 AVR, in MATLAB SIMULINK, and testing their response against historically applicable perturbances. This paper will document the philosophies for settings key parameters for the limiters and how this affects the performance of the model.
