Abstract
Problem Identification
Diabetes is the eighth leading cause of death in the United States. 90-95% of those who have diabetes have type 2. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) among Asian American adults is masked under aggregated data, resulting in lower prevalence compared to other races or ethnicities. In Sacramento County, Asians had the highest estimated prevalence of T2D.
Analysis
To understand how interrelationships and determinants contribute to T2D among Asian American adults, the Social Ecological Model and PRECEDE-PROCEED are the guiding models used to analyze the various critical layers. Current efforts in Sacramento County involve organizations offering programs to help with T2D, but none involve access to healthful foods.
Intervention (Solution) Proposal
Garden for Sacramento aims to reduce the incidence of T2D among Asian American adults by increasing access to culturally relevant healthful foods. Three gardens will be implemented in zip codes 95822, 95821, and 95838. Other parts of the intervention include cooking classes, T2D classes, and policy development.
Implementation and Evaluation
A wide variety of project staff is vital to the project's success. Stakeholders, such as the park districts, water agencies, and the county, need to approve the gardens to ensure that proper regulations are followed for them to operate. Partnerships with community-based organizations can assist in reaching Asian American adults. The intervention has a nonexperimental design. Instruments such as a Gantt chart, participant tracking logs, pre- and post-tests, feedback surveys, and statistical calculations will be utilized to measure the project's success.
