Abstract
Navigating the intricate landscape of academic communication can be daunting for students in STEM disciplines, particularly those grappling with anxiety. In the relentless pursuit of academic excellence, the pressure to interact with professors effectively adds another layer of stress to students' experiences. To address this challenge, we introduce FlowMail, an Outlook add-in designed to support students in overcoming communication barriers and managing anxiety in engineering and STEM disciplines at Sac state. Leveraging advanced technologies such as OpenAI models, FlowMail empowers students to compose academically appropriate emails, to help alleviate the fear of miscommunication or inadequate expression.FlowMail includes frequently asked questions email templates, covering a spectrum of common scenarios encountered by students. These templates not only expedite the email composition process but also serve as educational tools, equipping students with the necessary information needed for effective communication. In addition, FlowMail also incorporates Large Language Models such as GPT model that helps students to draft an effective email by proofreading them. We present an implementation of FlowMail within Microsoft Outlook of Sac State which shows how the tool addresses pervasive challenges of drafting emails in academic communication in engineering and STEM disciplines.
