Abstract
With a high demand for power consumption, a more reliable and secure operation of the transmission power system needs to be implemented. Therefore, advanced technologies are needed to supply today's world demands. The use of power electronics equipments in Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) can provide solution for these issues. FACTS technologies can improve transmission system operation with negligible infrastructure investment, environmental impact, and implementation time when compared to a construction of new transmission lines.
FACTS can efficiently control and regulate AC power grids. I will be using STATCOM (Static synchronous compensator) device, which is part of the FACTS technology, to show the benefits of using power electronics in power transmission systems. I will be running my simulations in Matlab/Simulink tools and I will compare the results of a power transmission system with and without the power electronic, STATCOM device.
This project will show the benefits of using FACTS devices in power transmission and distribution systems.
