Abstract
This project addressed the lack of parental involvement in children’s education and described the barriers and benefits that come with it. The literature identified the different barriers, which helped guide the creation of the handbook. The handbook uses research-based practices and activities that families can engage in that promote family literacy and parent involvement. This project contributes to the existing research on family literacy and activities that families can do that will be impactful to their literacy development. The activities in the handbook are designed to use a limited number of materials that are easily accessible and attainable for families. The handbook is centered around activities promoting learning for adults, children, and families. Specifically, what it is, why it is important, and how it impacts family literacy. Providing families with several activities that include reading, writing, speaking, listening, and technology, will promote parent involvement and help families develop their literacy skills.
