Abstract
With social media gaining popularity and being embedded more into people’s lives, a new type of bullying has emerged: cyberbullying. Vulnerable narcissism is a facet of narcissism described as being the socially maladaptive manifestation with high levels of anxiety and low self-esteem. Grandiose narcissists, however, are characterized as being extraverted with high levels of self-esteem. Given the primary goal for narcissists are to maintain their inflated egos, when they are not given the validation they feel they deserve, narcissists are likely to retaliate to reaffirm their inflated self-views. This study examined the role of vulnerable and grandiose narcissism in predicting aggression with an emotional connection to social media. Results showed that vulnerable narcissism fully mediated the relation between emotional connection with social media and aggression. These results indicate that vulnerable narcissists are more likely to aggress when not given validation because of their emotional connection with social media.
