Abstract
Statement of Problem The African American community is suffering from the burden of stroke. African Americans have a significantly higher risk of stroke and are affected more severely than any other racial or ethnic group. The community and public health are threatened due to African Americans experiencing high rates of isolated stroke occurrence. There is a lack of awareness and prevention strategies geared specifically to the African American community. Purpose of Project The purpose of this project is to explore the barriers for African Americans that are contributing to the racial disparities of stroke and present methods for increasing educational awareness within the African American community and their allies. Sources of Data A systematic review of literature was conducted utilizing the Sacramento State University Library, various medical-based websites, and resources from the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Conclusions Reached The project was developed specifically to provide insight to readers regarding the racial disparities of stroke for African Americans and to provide a suffering community with information to help combat these issues. The African American Guide, along with three short public services announcements will be utilized as a part of Sacramento State’s Stroke Awareness college basketball games.
