Objectives
To examine how male United States Marine Corps (USMC) reservists’ aerobic and resistance exercise practices compare to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines.
Methods
A total of 15 male USMC reservists (mean age = 26.5 6.58 years) completed an exercise questionnaire containing questions from the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-SF). A single-sample t-test and dependent t-test analyses were used to calculate and compare the USMC reservists’ aerobic and resistance training volumes to the ACSM recommended minimums at a significance level of p = 0.05.
Results
There were significant differences among USMC reservists’ total METmins compared to the recommended ACSM minimums (p < 0.001). Significant differences also appeared between USMC reservists’ moderate and vigorous exercise days (p = 0.018) and comparing upper and lower body set volumes (p = 0.017).
Conclusion
Male USMC reservists engage in higher amounts of aerobic and resistance exercise than the minimum recommendations set by the ACSM guidelines.
