Abstract
High speed serial links that connect devices are becoming increasingly difficult to design as link speed increases. Insertion loss, Inter Symbol Interference (ISI), noise and jitter often deteriorate the signal such that, if observed at the input of the receiver, the eye is very small, or completely closed. Modern receivers must improve the signal and extract the input stream with very low Bit Error Rate (BER). Through research and simulation, this project will explore the channels response to high speed signals and various techniques for improvement. In simulation, we will improve the receiver eye by adding various forms of equalization and amplification within the transmitter and receiver and observe the results. We expect the improved receiver should open the eye significantly yielding a much better BER. This process should give a good understanding of modern high speed serializer deserializer (SerDes) components.
