Abstract
English Language Learners are the fastest growing population of students in the public school system in the United States. They are a group that also faces many challenges academically. In order to gain a better understanding about how to help this group of students succeed, it is important to analyze the home literacy environment in which they acquire language. Furthermore, which languages are being spoken in the home and what motivates the parents of ELLs to foster language acquisition in which languages. The research includes an anonymous survey given to parents that have children in the emergent stage of language acquisition; that speak a native language other than English; and are from a country outside of the United States. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected using Qualtrics, a digital survey platform and data collection and analysis tool. The results from the data show that is important to parents for their children to speak and inherit their native language as well as learn English. Results also show that parents engage in a variety of literacy activities in both English and their native language in the home literacy environment.
