Abstract

Teenager(s) Psychologist School psychologist Mental Health Education
The purpose of this project is to provide practicing school psychologists with evidenced based interventions and recommendations associated with emotional disturbance (ED) in high school students. A presentation, based on a review of current research, was developed to address common challenges educators experience when working with this population. Outcomes for adolescents with ED are exceptionally poor in comparison to general education peers, but also within the context of other special education categories. This interactive presentation will pick up where the psycho-educational report leaves off, after a student's specific challenges have been established within the ED framework. Participants will learn specific interventions, techniques, accommodations, and modifications for each criterion. Historical context and cultural implications will also be discussed in order to enhance working knowledge and increase cultural competency for practitioners working with this unique population.
