Abstract
This study explored the positive factors that contribute to resiliency in academically successful Latino high school students. The role of spirituality was of particular interest and focus. Factors identified as positively contributing to academic success varied by student but were similar in their underlying theme. Family context and support was found to play a major role in motivating students to succeed academically and continue onto higher education. The ability to seek and receive guidance was also found to contribute to the well-being and academic success of the Latino students. Lastly, it was found that students who actively and regularly engaged in spiritual practices derived positive effects from doing so. This study provides valuable insight into the experiences of Latino high school-aged youth and the factors contributing to their academic achievement. Implications for social work practice and policy relative to positive Latino youth outcomes are explored. The need for future research is also discussed.
