Abstract
Some might say that a majority of a police officer's career is spent behind a wheel of a vehicle. For patrol officers, their vehicle is their office. Because officers spend so much time behind the wheel of a vehicle, it is very important to train them on how to properly drive a car. Police officers are faced with many challenges on a daily basis and their training is what prepares them for their job. Driving is a perishable skill that anyone can loose if they stop using it. Because police officers are faced with high risk driving situations, they must have a higher level of training than those who driver recreationally. It is important to understand the different methods of driving skills, and how often police agencies train their officer on driving. California Police Officers Standards and Training requires officers to have a minimum of four hours of drivers training every two years. This project focuses on the different types of drivers training offered to police
officers in California, and how often they are being trained. There is a direct correlation between effective drivers training and the amount of collisions officers are involved in. Officers are less likely to be involved in vehicle collisions when trained properly on how to drive a vehicle, thus reducing liability on police agencies.
