Abstract
This project is a community-based ESL course for adult ESL learners in the greater Sacramento area. This course seeks to incorporate the teaching of pre-employment and post-employment skills to adult ESL learners in order to help them transition from “survival English” to more proficient use of the English language, which will facilitate the learners’ professional development and integration into their community. The course consists of sixteen detailed lessons divided into eight units. It will be presented as a task-based course following the functional approach to speaking and writing. Throughout the course, students will develop skills in writing resumes and cover letters, networking, interviewing for a job, and communicating in the workplace. The course also aims to develop learners’ intercultural communication skills. This will be achieved through learner participation in communicative and collaborative learning activities and practice.
