Abstract
Smartphone plays a very important role in everyone’s daily life. According to recent statistics, mobile users have surpassed desktop users by almost 2 million since the year 2014. Taking this into account, mobile manufacturing companies have introduced phones with several new features and applications which further motivated users to use mobile phones frequently compared to early days. Storing private/sensitive data and accessing it on a regular basis using mobile phone has increased with smartphone usage. Along with genuine applications, many malicious applications are appeared in the market. I co-conducted a survey considering the smartphone security aspect to determine smartphone user’s behavior patterns. From the survey analysis, I found that many users are not aware of the existence of malicious applications. My goal for this project is to demonstrate how malicious applications can harm user’s private data stored in smartphones, if the user does not follow certain security norms on his/her smartphone. I have developed three Android applications to demonstrate how it can use user’s smartphone camera, audio recorder and contacts respectively in malicious ways. I have developed these applications in Android Framework and used PHP scripts to communicate with the server in order to upload private data stored on user’s smartphone.
