Abstract
Statement of the Problem
The purpose of this work was to interview nine individuals who identify as first year and first-generation Mexican American students. The following broad questions were explored through participants: How does machismo affect first-year Mexican American men or women in choosing a career/education path? Are there any inequalities deriving from machismo culture affecting college attainment? Was there a difference in family support towards Mexican American men compared to women?
Conclusions Reached
The women in this study confirm most of the theories connected to Machismo in the literature review. Many of the women share similar challenges and success regarding their role within their family during their upbringing. All participants in this study shared their experiences on how gender norms, bias, and perception played a direct role in defining Machismo and how they viewed education. All the individuals agreed that growing up around Machismo culture was important for their career trajectory. Additionally, all individuals felt that Machismo plays a role with college attainment within the Mexican American community.
