Abstract
Disc golf is a quickly growing sport which has a size-able following both recreationally and professionally. Since its conception in the 1970’s disc golf’s following has grown steadily, but at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic its popularity exploded. Disc golf’s appeal can be explained by the sports simple yet challenging nature, associated health benefits, and its relative affordability, accessibility, and sustainability compared to other sports. Even though over half of all disc golf courses are built in public parks, parks and recreation agencies vastly underinvest in the sport by means of programming. In Sacramento there are 25 publicly accessible and free to play disc golf courses on recreation and parks agencies’ land that are within 15 miles of downtown, but none of the recreation agencies in the area offer programming or lessons to introduce community members to the sport. The purpose of the current project is to develop a disc golf program to be implemented in a Sacramento recreation agency that teaches high school aged youth the fundamental skills, rules, and etiquette necessary to play the sport. By doing so the current project works to integrate disc golf into Sacramento’s recreation and park agencies.
