Abstract
This project documents the development of a written selection exam designed to rank applicants for three entry-level correctional peace officer classifications. The exam was developed to assess the core knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (KSAOs) based on the most recent job analysis. A supplemental job analysis questionnaire was used to establish the relationship between the KSAOs and estimated improvements in job performance. Subject Matter Experts assisted in the development of the exam specifications and a 91-item pilot exam was administered to Academy cadets. Analyses of the pilot exam based on classical test theory were used to select the 52 scored items for the final version of the exam. To meet the civil service requirements, a minimum passing score was developed and passing scores were divided into six rank groups according to psychometric principles.
