Abstract
The lack of available Hmong children’s books tackling antiracism is a problem the project seeks to address. Children around the age of five are already race-conscious (York, 2016) with prejudice toward visible minorities developing as early as three years old (Raabe & Beelmann, 2011). Racism is difficult to eradicate, and its presence in our daily lives and system renders us to closely look at how to stop prejudice and racism from developing at an early age. Children’s literature plays a substantial role in demonstrating through explicit as well as discreet messages on how to understand and interact with members outside of children’s social circle. As such, the project endeavors to fill in a gap on children’s literature, particularly for Hmong children, in order to provide an antiracist resource. Integral to the development of the book is the use of Critical Race Theory, particularly Critical Race Content Analysis, as a lens to contextualize the rationale behind its creation.
