Abstract
VAST Challenge is an annual competition organized by the IEEE Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VAST) community. It aims to create advancements in the field of visual analytics by providing complex datasets and fictional yet realistic scenarios to challenge participants to think critically and create visual analytic tools to solve the problem. The challenge is structured into several Mini Challenges and a Grand Challenge. For the year 2024, the challenge is to analyze complex fishing activities in the region of Oceanus. The project focuses on solving the Mini Challenge 2 of the VAST 2024 Challenge.
The scenario is that the analysts at FishEye International, a non-profit organization aims to find and prevent illegal fishing activities in the region of Oceanus. A commercial fishing company called SouthSeafood Express Corp has been caught fishing illegally. FishEye wants to better understand the illegal behavior and therefore has collected the data of all the ships moving through the region in order to deduce patterns of the commercial fishing behavior. These records are loaded into a dataset called CatchNet, the Oceanus Knowledge Graph. Participants of the challenge are expected to analyze the data and draw conclusions of the fishing behavior in the region of Oceanus.
