Abstract
Fundamental objective of this research can be comparing two different types of energy storage, i.e. battery energy storage (BESS) and the pump hydro storage (PHS). Consequently, the work will present how these different energy storage types works and will provide an understanding of advantages and disadvantages associated with each one of them. Positive sequence power flow (PSLF) software from GE will be used to conduct the mentioned studies and create the base case. A real-life project will be assessed using the Lake Elsinore advance pump storage project LEAPS. By simulating a battery storage system and a pump hydro system, we will determine the appropriate and cost-effective storage system. All public information available on LEAPS project, manual on PSLF software and datasheet on equipment in order to build the simulation and be able to compare the two different storage systems Results obtained in PSLF identify the power system stability enhancement by each storage system based on their speed in intermittency coverage. Also, an economical assessment will be conducted on the possible solutions. We envision the pump storage will be the most economical and reliable solution even though batteries are very popular.
