Abstract
The purpose of this research study was to explore the barriers in accessing mental heath services for students who are affected by parental incarceration. The researcher used an exploratory qualitative approach and content analysis. Findings were generated from the perspective of 10 social work professionals working directly with this demographic. There are five themes that emerged, they include; 1) the role of the social worker with an emphasis on their awareness of this vulnerable population, 2) school disciplinary policies that are creating paths into the juvenile and adult criminal justice systems, 3) limitations within the school system, highlighting educational resources for social workers, 4) school funding and, 5) community relationships. The study demonstrates how building community, promoting education and advocating for students with incarcerated parents assists with improving access to crucial services. Implications for social work practice are presented.
