Abstract
Background: Despite the benefits of exercise on the cardiovascular system, research continues to show lack of exercise adherence post cardiac rehabilitation (CR). The main goal of CR includes exercise maintenance after completing the CR program to decrease further hospital readmissions and future cardiac events. Interventions are needed to encourage patients to make exercise a continued part of their lifestyle after they have completed the program. Objective: To create an online training manual aimed at improving exercise adherence after completing a CR program. Methods: An online training manual was created for CR patients to access after completing the CR program. Information from research articles ranging from years 2000- 2020 were gathered from Sacramento State’s One Search Database to aid in creating this online manual. The website includes seven features that encompasses a comprehensive approach to post CR exercise compliance: the goals of the manual; exercise as a lifestyle for cardiovascular health; CR position statements; improving exercise adherence; cardiac education programs and classes; mental health; and social support services and programs. Position Statements on CR were gathered from prestigious organizations and journals such as the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention, Journal of Medicine, American Heart Association, and American College of Cardiology. An exercise program including aerobic training, strength training, balance and stretching was created with exercise recommendations from ACSM. An online log was also designed for patients to download and utilize for exercise tracking. Discussion: Extensive research in exercise adherence post cardiac rehabilitation revealed that patients spent more time in sedentary behavior months after completion of the CR program. Common barriers to exercise adherence post CR were identified as sedentary behaviors, psychosocial variables, socioeconomics, and limited services. This manual will provide a means of improving exercise habits through weekly exercises, weekly and daily notifications, continuous social support from health professionals and peers, education on heart health, mental health, and support services and programs. Conclusion: An easily accessible website-based training manual that encompasses the importance of lifelong exercise, continued social support and education, aerobic training, strength training, and exercise tracking may improve exercise adherence post CR.
