Abstract
Culture shapes the way people think, act and behave in all aspects of life, and this becomes very clear in a classroom with great cultural diversity. While multicultural education has been used as a way to create cultural acceptance within a classroom or educational setting, it has done little to shed light on the fact that culture is more than certain foods or holidays. The culturally responsive pedagogy takes over
where multicultural education has left off. Code-switching is one element of the pedagogy. Code-switching, when done properly, is a skill used by a speaker to switch between their home language and academic language. This code-switching curriculum project has been developed in response to the Academic Achievement Gap and a growing need for a culturally responsive pedagogy within the school system. The lessons found in the appendix are text-book independent from state-adopted curriculum, and are intended to be used as a means to improve students' knowledge and use of academically correct grammar.
