Abstract
Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines are effective precision controlled instrumentation used in many manufacturing methods. Many machines like milling, routing, laser, water jet, 3D printing, and plasma machines utilize this control method (CNC) to manufacture parts with extreme precision and repeatability. To utilize this precision control system in a unique application the thesis’ purpose is to apply a 360-degree computer controlled ink tattoo to a user’s arm with a custom built machine and an adaptive process. The overlying challenges include designing and building the mechanics of the 3-axis machine, 3D scanning of the users arm, using 3D modeling software to wrap a 2D image over the 3D models’ scan, utilize computer aided manufacturing (CAM) software to generate toolpaths for the tattoo gun, and use proximity sensors with a spring mechanism to maintain uniform pressure during the operation. With this machine and process, perfect ink geometries can be placed on a compound curvature such as an arm and innovate a sector dominated by manual application. Furthermore, the mechanics of this machine can be applied to many fields such as manufacturing, medical, and recreational sectors. For example, replacing the tattoo head mechanism with a laser or spindle would allow precision machining of a stationary workpiece. In the medical realm, an x-ray or ultrasonic device could be attached to 3D map fragile or injured extremities without an MRI.
