Abstract
“Burn Patterns” is a novella that follows the main character, Max, and his father during a fire investigation and, ultimately, Max’s extended stay in Lake Tahoe. Max is seeking confidence, independence, and identity within the setting, Tahoe, a place where urban sprawl impinges upon the beauty of nature. On the surface, Max struggles to negotiate his relationship with his father, as well as his newfound attraction for Stacey. Eventually, Max learns that his dad is missing evidence from the investigation, which complicates the narrative. Max’s actions and reflections regarding choices he makes allows him to develop more autonomy as an individual, while also bearing the burden of his mistake as his moral responsibility.
