Abstract
The following project is a historic-architectural survey that analyzes the Burlingame Terrace residential subdivision located in East Sacramento to determine if the subdivision meets the criteria for listing on the Sacramento Register of Historic and Cultural Resources. The survey area boundaries comprise 41st Street and the East half of 42nd Street from H Street in the South and D Street in the North. This study consults primary source materials, such as deeds and newspapers, and secondary sources on the history of racial segregation and East Sacramento. The African American presence in this neighborhood despite the restrictions placed on them to purchase property in the majority of East Sacramento, makes it significant to the history and development of the African American community in Sacramento including several notable figures in the history of Sacramento. The residential homes in this subdivision maintain their historic integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association. The Burlingame Terrace subdivision meets the qualifications for listing on the Sacramento Register as a historic district under City Code Section 17.604.210.
