Abstract
The purposes of my thesis composition are: To explore a spatial element in music, to explore the Shepard Scale as a musical tool, and to explore elements of other fields as inspiration, namely math and science. To implement a spatial effect, I have divided a full classical orchestra into four smaller orchestras that will surround the audience. The Shepard Scale is utilized in a variety of different ways, from a background, singular effect, to one of the major structural components of the entire third movement. The first movement uses the Shepard Scale frequently, and is influenced by my research of auditory illusions in the music of Gyorgy Ligeti. Finally, as a means of exploring other disciplines, I have used the irrational number π (pi) and the genetic building block DNA as inspiration for movements two and three respectively.
