Abstract
Brewing comprised one of nineteenth-century Sacramento's major industries, yet remained neglected as the subject of a comprehensive study. Because of their contribution to local history and industry, Sacramento's pioneer brewers are an important component of Sacramento history. It is the intention of this Historical Inventory of Sacramento Brewing to document the achievements of Sacramento's pioneer brewers in order to create a public awareness and sense of appreciation for their role in helping transform Sacramento from an agrarian settlement into a legitimate commercial municipality.
The information used in this project originated from a variety of sources. City and county directories, a wide range of local and state government documents, works on local history and biography, historic maps, theses, books and dissertations regarding the histories of Germans and brewing in America were indispensible to the completion of this project. The information culled from these sources reveal that Sacramento's brewers established a successful and thriving brewing industry, as well as a cohesive social and business community.
