Abstract
Although there are a good number of nonprofit organizations in the Sacramento metropolitan area focused on arts-based education (e.g. music, theater, and visual arts), gaps still exist in promoting youth literacy through the arts. This thesis sought to map the landscape of arts-based education nonprofit services offered to Sacramento-area youth by performing a qualitative content analysis of six NGO websites. The organizations analyzed were chosen for their commitment to providing arts-based education to K-12 students in Sacramento. To gain a more holistic view of available services, I analyzed organizations focused on a few different genres of art: two organizations offering services in creative writing; two focused on music; and two on theater. Content analysis coupled with a survey questionnaire administered to individuals involved with the organizations helped me to gain a better understanding of the overall nonprofit landscape in Sacramento, as well as identify gaps present in available educational services. Now that these gaps are identified, they can then be addressed and filled by a future research project; or existing organizations can address them.
