Abstract
Astral Wastelands is a giant, one-movement work, comprised of three major sections: the introduction /main theme representing the planet’s acceptance of its fate, the slow middle section representing the planet’s reflection on its own existence, and the powerful conclusion signifying that through death comes rebirth and life anew. As my first work for a large ensemble, it embodies the culmination of my studies at Sacramento State. Although the piece employs some advanced compositional techniques, it is still very accessible to a wide array of audiences, as this idea of accessibility was constantly running through my head as I was composing the work. I also had to keep in mind that everyone needed something interesting to play, and I had to accomplish this task without destroying or changing the integrity of the piece. While this proved to be somewhat difficult, it also better prepared me for future compositional endeavors. Working hands-on with the wind ensemble has been a luxury and is an experience that every composer should endure.
