Abstract
Statement of Problem
This study attempts to assess what impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had on opioid-related overdose deaths in California and whether there has been an increase (or potential decrease) in opioid drug usage and abuse as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Sources of Data
This study utilized a quantitative data analysis using a descriptive research design and used a secondary data analysis in an attempt to assess the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has had on opioid-related overdose deaths in California from 2019-2020. Collection of data were analyzed via a SPSS multiple regression model by which the results were interpreted.
Conclusions Reached
The study results suggest that the Covid-19 pandemic had a null effect on opioid-related overdose deaths in California. However, the results reaffirm existing studies that find that minorities and young males are at a higher risk and are substantially more affected by opioids and opioid abuse.
