Abstract
This paper discusses the development and analysis of simulation models using SimPowerSystems utilities in MATLAB to validate the Wide-Area Loss Index (WALI) method for voltage instability protection of power systems. WALI is a novel method for protection of a bulk power system against voltage instability. In this methodology, a region of interest is defined and the system is protected against voltage collapse using synchronized wide-area power-flow measurements. A power corridor was built in the simulation model to demonstrate the behavior of WALI algorithm where the load is increased with a constant power factor until the system collapses.
