Abstract
Images are the most accurate and common way that people communicate, which leads us to want to create and store them for future use. Database technology has advanced to a place where we are able to store large amounts of digital images. As these databases grow into the billions searching and retrieving becomes a very difficult computing problem. Oracle's interMedia package uses a "query by image content" (QBIC) paradigm that partly solves certain image matching problems. Others in the field have produced alternative approaches and capabilities, for instance De Bonet has patented a query-by-example solution.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the strengths and weakness of Oracle's QBIC technology.
