Abstract
Problem Identification
This project identifies PTSD in Afghan youth aged 12-18 as an emerging public health issue, as they are the most at-risk group for developing mental health conditions due to war and conflict. Hardships like poverty, displacement, and starvation can lead to drastic impacts on Afghans’ mental health, leading to increased risks of developing PTSD. Girls from this age group are at higher risks of developing and suffering from serious mental health problems like PTSD.
Analysis
This project aims to improve access to mental health services for Afghan youth aged 12-18 experiencing PTSD. Factors at each level of the Social Ecological Model influences PTSD. Hence, the program focuses on increasing participants’ ability to better manage their PTSD symptoms by addressing multiple contributory factors. This section analyzes the health issue at stake while utilizing the SEM to identify factors and determinants of PTSD among the target population.
Intervention (Solution) Proposal
The proposed intervention includes a program surrounding a health education and health advocacy initiative. These consist of health education classes and sessions that focuses on PTSD-related topics to increase awareness of the issue. Additionally, an advocacy taskforce will be formed in the program that will discuss a policy initiative to implement support groups in order to foster companionship among participants.
Implementation and Evaluation
Health education and health advocacy strategies are imperative to meet the needs of the target population. For successful implementation of the program, qualified individuals will be hired to execute the project. The intervention will apply process and summative evaluation methods to ensure efficiency of the project.
