Abstract
Statement of Problem
There are various community programs available to residents whom reside in the Sacramento community and Latino children have access to these programs just as any other group. However, there is still an identified need for services to better address and take into account the different parental characteristics and demographics of Latinos that may hinder or influence utilization of these beneficial community programs for their children.
Sources of Data
Through an examination of published literature and from personal observations regarding this population in general a quantitative study was designed. A quantitative study was chosen to examine the parental demographics to find patterns that may be related to awareness and utilization of programs for their children. The data was obtained from a sample of 21 male and female Latino adults, all of which were over eighteen years old. All of the participants had at least one child (biological or step) that was of the elementary school age in their household.
Conclusions Reached
There are two important conclusions that can be made from the results of this study. First, that language is associated with the awareness of programs, wherein Spanish speakers are more aware of the programs in general. The second and final conclusion is for Latino families, the more children in the family there are the more likely the family will use supportive programs.
