Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the needs of emancipating foster youth and make recommendations for developing a transitional housing program designed for emancipating foster youth at the New Millennium Foster Family Agency. Data was gathered from 22 client files from the New Millennium Foster Family Agency. The files were reviewed for content pertaining to the following variables: demographics, placement information, housing, education, employment, daily living skills, financial information, support information, transportation and transitional housing program information. Findings indicate that foster youth are insufficiently prepared for independent living, particularly in the areas of pursuing higher education, employability, establishing sustainable connections with biological family members and social networks. The findings support the need for a transitional housing program that addresses the above mentioned needs of emancipating foster youth.
