Abstract
Statement of Problem
As boys advance through school their success in language arts, as evidenced by their test scores, falls further and further behind those of their female counterparts. That discrepancy is greater for boys of low socio-economic status and this gap widens with age. Every year educators grapple with the realization that they were not able to reach the level of success with a few, students, as they were able to reach with the rest of the students in their classroom. Even though many factors play a part in a student's successful mastery of grade level standards, teachers can't help but question whether they had accomplished all they could for those few students. There are steps that can and should be taken to reverse this pattern. In order for that to happen one must first recognize that there is a problem. Once educators recognize there is an under performance between male and female students in the area of language arts and under-stand the possible consequences of that deficit, they will be ready to take a step back to reflect on their own contribution to the problem. It is only then that they can become a part of the solution to the problem.
