Abstract
The purpose of this study is to obtain an over-all view of the music curricula, schedules, materials, and teaching situations as they exist in the schools of fifteen northern California counties. It has the endorsement of: Music Education Research Council of the Music Educators National Conference, William R. Sur, Chairman; The California Music Educators Association, George F. Barr, President; The Sacramento State College Music Department, Paschal Monk, Assistant Professor; and The Sacramento State College Placement Office, John C. Samara, Director. Data collected will be used to assist these people and the organizations they represent to be of better service to the surrounding school districts and communities. A survey was conducted by use of the questionnaire, and supplemented with a limited sampling of personal interviews. No evaluation of any situation was to be considered. The survey presents the picture as it exists with no criteria on which to make evaluations.
