Abstract
Researchers have found that when parents and children positively engage in reading activities, academic achievement increases (Goodall & Montgomery, 2014; Sénéchal & Young, 2008). It is beneficial for reading development when parents and caregivers read with their children and play games that teach letters and sounds (Sénéchal & LeFevre, 2002). When children can read on their own, parents can enhance their children’s vocabulary and background knowledge by reading to them books that are beyond their current reading level (Massaro, 2017).
A review of the literature uncovered a lack of easily accessible, research proven, up-to-date information about reading development and at-home literacy activities written specifically for parents and caregivers. The literature review themes are the Significant Role of Parents and Caregivers in Reading Development, the Simple View of Reading, Foundational Skills of Reading, and Reading Comprehension Components.
This project handbook, A Parents’ and Caregivers’ Guide to Reading Comprehension, is designed to provide a valuable resource for parents and caregivers to understand reading development and become active participants in helping their children become successful readers.
