Abstract
Taking the place of unconnected "busy work" during independent work time in reading groups is the following handbook of activities. These aforementioned activities are a research based curriculum of student centered stations. This curriculum, in the form of an instructional handbook, at least initially, will be geared towards second and third grade students and are based on the California state standards. Essentially this instructional handbook will include different activities the teacher can instruct the students on through mini lessons, which in turn, the students will take away to complete on their own in a collaborative group setting, while the teacher works with another small group in guided reading instruction. As well, the teacher will be instructed how to effectively monitor and guide instruction of these activities as needed. These activities will encapsulate three main areas of study-word work, comprehension, and literature response, and will be based on research about best practices for reading group activities. Included are modifications or allowances to compensate for the wide continuum of reading levels and needs found even in just two grade levels. This instructional handbook of student centered stations encompasses the aforementioned three content areas and would need to be done on a rotating basis in conjunction with the teacher-led guided reading group instruction.
