Abstract
This study examined treatment modalities used with Alcohol and Other Drug youth clients with special reference to the use of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT) from the perspectives of service providers. A sample of twenty-one service providers from Sacramento County who volunteered to participate in this study were administered a questionnaire that assessed profile of the clients, aspects related to treatment modality, particularly Motivational Interviewing and
Multidimensional Family Therapy. Analysis of the data indicate that solely incorporating MI into treatment with adolescent AOD clients can create an increased level of participation in treatment; however, MI should not be used exclusively as a treatment method Incorporating comprehensive treatment methods, such as MDFT, will benefit the service provider's ability to supply more appropriate AOD services for youth.
